“They were laughing so hard they could hardly stand it,” says Salter, now 94. Windy remained on his best behavior, as did the other canine attendees-but the human guests, not so much. “Guests brought classic bar mitzvah gifts like fountain pens, and also dog biscuits,” recalls Janet Salter, the former newspaper cartoonist and philanthropist who hosted the festivities along with her late husband, Beverly Hills Mayor Max Salter. The invitations requested “the honor of your presence at the bark mitzvah and 13th Birthday” celebration for the Duke of Windsor-a black cocker spaniel whom his humans dubbed “Windy”-followed by a “Dogtail” party. More than 100 guests attended, and Monty Hall of Let’s Make a Deal served as emcee. Every dog that comes through the center is named after a dog or individual who worked tirelessly on that day 15 years ago. The center was also opened to train dogs in order to give them healthier and longer lives. It was noticed during the chaos of 9/11 that, since the working dogs came from all over the country to Ground Zero, some of the dogs had different training and different commands. The Penn Vet Working Dog Center, founded by Otto, opened its doors in 2012 to train working dogs in order to set a standard for working dogs. Cindy Otto, DVM, PhD, and founder of the Penn Vet Working Dog Center said that every working dog involved that day was an “anchor” for victims and workers alike. A study was done that showed that individuals affiliated with the dogs that day and in the days after have had lower incidences of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These dogs were also a source of relief and comfort to everyone involved. But in case you forgot the classics, maybe I need to jog your memory a little. There were so many good bangers from around this time that I can't even keep track of them all. However, what made the parties the most memorable was all the dancing. For me, prime #barmitzvahszn was around 2012-2013. Now let me tell you, the bar mitzvahs were the sh!t, and were always so much fun, especially when it was one of your friends or even your own. Parties typically consisted of a DJ party, speeches from family and friends, giveaways, a montage, and lots of mosh pits. Traditionally, there is a service where the young adult recites a portion from the Torah (the religious scripture) followed by a blowout at some sort of country club, bar, or various event venue. Growing up in an area with a predominantly Jewish community, many of my weekends in seventh grade were spent hopping from temple to temple and event venue to event venue to celebrate ~adulthood.~įor those of you who may not know, a Bar (men) or Bat (women) Mitzvah is a ceremony within the Jewish faith that celebrates the transition from a teenager to an emerging adult.
